Innovation Digest – March 2023 Vol. 2

It’s been a busy first quarter and as usual, all my circles converge. I’ve been honored to lead a multi-stakeholder project for the Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI) addressing how we can improve health technology assessment to incorporate and advance health equity. Complex challenges are my happy space! I’ve shared the recent insights report, as well as a blog I wrote after dipping my toe in the AI content generation pool. AI might speed up our research and synthesis enterprise (as if it’s not already fast enough), but it won’t replace the need for one-on-one conversations that focus on learning and understanding the true complexity of our human experience. And, as I’ve said many times over the last 30 years, if you want to solve some of the fundamental challenges in health care, start by asking an individual, their caregiver, and family about their health journey and their lived experience. They understand economic burden, tradeoffs, resource allocation, social drivers and all the rest. We just need to make them the primary experts in the room and ask them what solutions they would find useful. Patient-led transformation is possible if we’re brave enough to hear the answers.
